We see a clear portrait of the Father’s love for Jesus in His baptism in the Jordan River. It is a dramatic illustration of what the Father’s love is like in the life and experience of Jesus.
Mark 1:9-11 “In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 Immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him, 11 and a voice came out of the heavens: “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”
This was Jesus’ final assurance that He was the Son of God the Father and the anointed Messiah.
Psalm 2:7 I will surely tell of the decree of the LORD: He said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.”
Isaiah 42:1 “Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold; My chosen one in whom My soul delights. I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the nations.”
QUESTION: What have we/you heard? What are the three most powerful words you might want to hear?
For many it is simply, “I LOVE YOU!”
Positive Aspect: If we HEAR these words often from our natural father when we are young, they have a powerful effect for good.
Negative Aspect: If we DON’T hear them from our natural father when we are young, the insecurities that can result can severely undermine our whole life and success.
Jesus heard the words of love announced by His Father and His heart secured and assured for what lay ahead and the challenges that would come to His identity and Sonship. Jesus could say, “Yes, I am my Father’s Son and He loves Me.”
Jesus knew who he was and who His Father was. He had no doubt as to His identity and His Sonship as He rose from the waters of Baptism in the Jordan.
QUESTION: Do you KNOW your real identity?
The experience of the Father’s love proved to be of critical importance in Jesus’ encounter with Satan after He was led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit.
The Challenge by Satan
In the wilderness, Jesus had three areas of his character directly challenged by Satan. Jesus had His: Identity; Sonship and His self-worth directly challenged. These three areas are the target of Satan’s attack against the adopted sons of God the Father, you and I. How we respond to these attacks is determined by the assurance of our identity – what we know, what we have heard, and what we live by that has been learned from close intimate relationship with the Father.
Listening to the Father’s voice requires a heart that is secured by His love. When we are secured by the Father’s love, we are in a place where we can hear, “You are My adopted son and I love you.”
This site is about God as our Father, parent, the One whose love is tangible, expressed in tenderness and very real. I am not talking about a concept. I am sharing what I know to be absolute truth as found in God’s Word and experienced in the reality of relationship.
If God can do that for me He can do it for you.
